rubbed with smaller sandpaper block.

Strange Garden, Out of the Shattered Shadows 1; two required in
A Monkey’s Paw, Broken Music, Finding Refuge in the Remains,
Beneath the Fired City; three in The Fish that became the Sun.
RP5 Large sheet of art paper on a frame, rubbed with hands.
Used in Beneath the Fired City and The Fish that became the Sun.
RP6 Large sheet of plywood, rubbed with putty knife or other flexible metal blade.
Used in Beneath the Fired City.
RP7-RP11 Five metal scrapers. Various sizes of small metal containers scraped
with pencil shaped metal files.
One used in Quartet, Broken Music and Out of the Shattered Shadows;
two in Beneath the Fired City and Finding Refuge in the Remains;
five in The Fish that became the Sun.
RP12-RP13 A pair of glass instruments that make sound by rubbing. Panes of sheet
glass each at least 40 inches long, mounted horizontally so thatwater can lie on the
surfaces. These are rubbed with three or four fingers.
Both used in Marine Residua, A Monkey’s Paw; one in The Fish that became the Sun.
RP14-RP15 Two instruments, each consisting of a balloon mounted in aresonating
cylinder. The balloon is rubbed with the fingers.
Used in Beneath the Fired City and The Fish that became the Sun.
RP16-RP17 Two ceramic tiles that are rubbed with wetted fingers.
Used in A Monkey’s Paw.
RP18-19 Two pairs of paving stones.
The edge of one is dragged across the surface of the other.
Used in Towards the Darkness and The Fish thatbecame the Sun.
RP20 One large cabinet (an ordinary wooden furniture cabinet or small wardrobe,
with plywood panels) rubbed with a large superball headed beater.
Used in A Monkey’s Paw.
Friction Drums: no special drums are usually required, but the method of exciting the
membrane requires either (a) superball headed beaters as in Wheat 6, After the Rain,
A Monkey’s Paw, Broken Music, Beneath the Fired City, Out of the Shattered Shadows1,
The Fish that became the Sun; or (b) rubbed glass rods approx. 30 inches long and 50mm
diameter. In using rods one end rests on the drum’s membrane and the rod is then rubbed
with wetted fingers.
